There’s only one you

It’s easy to see ourselves as inconsequential, especially as there are so many people in the world that are making such interesting things. The sheer volume of books, plays, TV shows and comics is overwhelming- even if we lived for a thousand years we would never experience all of it. What’s one little poem or drawing in the face of all this art?

Sorry to sound like a Mum, but you need to understand that you are unique. Think of your favourite film- imagine if the director had just thought, ah no one needs to know what I think, how I see this. It would be rubbish! Become someone who believes they have something to add to the investigation. Because ultimately that’s what culture is- a huge collaborative investigation into what it is to be human.

Every outpost is important. Some of us want to research the funnier aspects of being a person, some of us are positioned to explore grief or sadness. Sometimes we research all of it- there’s no right or wrong. It’s fine to be light or dark, sad or happy. Violence is OK, romance is OK, it’s all ‘us’ and needs examination. The project badly needs your voice as you have an exceptional way of seeing.

You were put on this earth to make things using your own experience as an act of generosity to the rest of us! How will I ever know about the time you saw the little girl drop the bag of goldfish if you don’t tell me? You have the choice to create a portal through space and time for me to see what you saw, to experience it as you- it’s a laugh! You can take me anywhere you want to.

Don’t underestimate the power of this- it’s immense. You can make others feel less alone. With this in mind, can you really say that your work is meaningless or insignificant? The answer is... never.
